Dear students we know that it is holiday time for you. You are looking forward to going either for a trip to hills or a trip
to a sea beach. It could be a holiday in Rajasthan, and you enjoy the lovely sand dunes or you may take a holiday in
Darjeeling. You may go anywhere but social systems form an important part of your everyday life. As a keen observer
and a committed social studies student we would like you to observe and study the various features of a tribal society.
If you enjoy Industrial systems and are keen to know about the history of Industrialisation in India, then you have a
choice. Take up any industry or a group of Industries and study various features of its functioning.
Chapter 4- Tribals, Dikus and the vision of a Golden Age (Our Pasts-III, Part – I)
Prepare a Project with the following aspects in mind.
- Choose any one tribe in India. It could be in J&K, Punjab, Rajasthan, Assam, Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh etc.
- You can go through chapter 4 and formulate an idea about the life of the Tribals.
- How did tribal groups live? Life of hunters and gatherers. Their food habits, customs and traditions, their clothing patterns.
- Also try and understand their family system, political system, economic resources and cultivation. Find out the
crops they grew, the methods they used.
- Finally, The affect of colonial rule on the lives of tribals. OR
Chapter 7- Weavers, Iron smelters and Factory owners (Our Pasts – III, Part-II)
Prepare a project with the following aspects in mind.
Choose any one industry or a group of industries in India. Take either clothes industry, handicrafts, iron or any other
industry of your choice.
- Find out about Indian textiles and the world market. Who were the weavers? How did the Indian textile decline?
- The growth of Indian Textiles.
- The growth of Iron and steel industry in India.
- How did the colonial rule completely deurbanised the original centres of art and craft and created new industries with English system of functioning.
- Go through chapter 7 and you will get a fairly good idea about the process of deindustrialization and industrialization in India. Decline of industries in nineteenth century to growth of industries in the twentieth century.
Note- Make a chart, poster, a file or a scrap book.
Do not write more than 5 to 6 pages. Write in your own handwriting. It should not be typed. The contents should be to the point and specific. Do not unnecessarily write things which are not concerned with the topic. Paste good and colourful pictures. The pictures must have clarity and specificity.
