Raksha Bandhan Celebrations

Pre-primary presented a comprehensive programme on Raksha Bandhan on 4th August, 2009 at 9.00 am in the Multi Purpose Hall of the school. The programme provided us with an opportunity to interact and showcase our efforts and process of learning of the children. This batch of children have joined the pre-primary team from April 2009 and have immense talent and potential in them thus allowing us to contemplate of a presentation at this time of the year. They showed lot of enthusiasm and interest during the preparation period.
Raksha Bandhan as one would agree is a predominantly a North Indian festival. It seemed a simple topic in the beginning for the team. With rounds of brain storming sessions, lot of research and collection of informations and data, the team could draft a conceptually well knit programme. The topics that the various classes decided for were as follows…

  • Raksha Bandhan as interpreted and celebrated differently all over India.
  • The mythological stories of Rakhi depicting stories of Yama and Yamuna and Goddess Laxmi and King Bali.
  • A brief mention of a historical event on Raksha Bandhan during the Mughal period when Rani Karnawati tied Rakhi on King Humayun.
  • A short skit on the preparations of Rakhi concluded with a dance on a self composed song.
  • A welcome song ‘teri hai zameen…’ that allows us to thank the Almighty for everything around us created the ambience of festival and its aesthetics.

The preparation time for the entire show was little less than a month. During this period alongwith the regular curricular activities, children started preparing for the event. This provided them a platform to learn various skills, learn to function in a group in tandem with others, learn to coordinate with different groups, development of gross motor skills etc. The medium of presentation was Hindi. This allowed children to know and learn the fine nuances of the language while learning to narrate the various incidents. It helped them to gather lot of informations on Raksha Bandha, also being called Shravan Purnima.

The presentation reflected a good team effort with lot of spirit and vibrance. It displayed the vigour, essence, beauty and strength of our Indian culture and its festivals.
